This Changes Everything: The Holy Spirit - Day 5

Day 5: The Friend Who Carries the Weight

Reading: John 14:16-17 and Matthew 11:28-30

Devotional: The Greek word Jesus used for the Holy Spirit, parakletos, carries the image of someone who comes alongside you to help carry something too heavy to carry alone. Jesus himself, in his humanity, needed help carrying his cross to Calvary. How much more do we need the Helper in our daily lives? Many believers are exhausted not because following Jesus is impossible, but because they are trying to carry their cross entirely in their own strength. The Holy Spirit is not a spectator in your life. He is a companion, a counselor, a friend who never leaves, never tires, and always knows exactly how to help you carry what God has called you to carry.

Reflection: Where in your life are you most exhausted from carrying something alone that God never intended you to carry without his help?

Practical Application: In prayer today, physically and symbolically lay down the burden you have been carrying alone. Ask the Holy Spirit to come alongside you, take the heavier end, and lead the way forward. Then rest in that posture throughout your day.
